Detailed Tour Itinerary

Discover what awaits you on this 2-day journey from Marrakech to the Zagora Desert. From crossing the High Atlas Mountains and exploring traditional kasbahs to enjoying a camel ride and spending a night in a desert camp, here is a day-by-day breakdown of your adventure.

Day 1: Marrakech to the Zagora Desert via the High Atlas Mountains

Your journey begins with a morning departure from your Marrakech accommodation, leaving the bustling medina behind as you ascend into the majestic High Atlas Mountains. Navigating the winding roads of the Tizi n’Tichka pass, which reaches an elevation of 2,260 meters, you will be treated to sweeping panoramic views of terraced valleys and traditional mud-brick Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides. Frequent stops allow you to capture the dramatic, shifting landscapes on camera and breathe in the crisp mountain air before descending toward the arid plains of the south.

By midday, the route brings you to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a spectacular fortified ksar that has served as the backdrop for legendary films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After a guided walk through its ancient, labyrinthine clay alleys and a traditional Moroccan lunch overlooking the riverbed, the drive continues through Ouarzazate and the lush Skoura Oasis. As late afternoon approaches, you will enter the breathtaking Dades Valley, renowned for its dramatic red rock formations known as “monkey fingers,” where you will settle into a boutique kasbah hotel for a traditional dinner and a restful first night.

Following a traditional Moroccan breakfast, the journey continues along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward the towering Todra Gorges. Here, a massive fault divides the High Atlas Mountains, creating a narrow canyon with sheer limestone walls rising 300 meters above the rushing river below. You will have ample time to walk through the gorge, feeling the immense scale of the cliffs and watching local Berber families bring their livestock to the river to drink.

Leaving the canyons behind, the landscape shifts dramatically as you pass through Erfoud, the gateway to the Sahara, and finally arrive at the edge of the Merzouga desert. Here, you will trade your vehicle for a camel, embarking on a serene trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes just as the sun begins to set, painting the sand in vibrant shades of gold and orange. You will arrive at your luxury desert camp as twilight falls, enjoying a spectacular dinner under a canopy of stars before gathering around a campfire to listen to traditional Gnawa music.
